Up and coming blue devils have nothing to do with basketball

I have lived in this area the better part of 40 years and I came to recognize one word when it comes to athletics. From my first memories of names like Spanarkel, Gimenski and Banks to Plumlees, to Coach K and a cast of others, Duke has always been about basketball. It still is but Ks boys aren't the only ones on the playground anymore. Despite a devastating bowl game loss, it is clear David Cutcliffe and the Devils football team is the real deal. If he stays in town there is a good chance there will be brighter days ahead and regular bowl appearances that will result in wins soon enough.
It was devastating to watch turnovers in very bad situations cost the Devils a bowl game win last week. It was unfortunate such a lopsided score went with such a close game.
When, however, the sting wears off this Blue Devils team will realize how good they were. When they strap on the pads for spring practice in a few months they will realize they have a very bright future in front of them. They will be excited to start throwing the pig skin around again. They will be eager for the first kickoff of the spring.
Coach "Cut" as fans know him gave a big vote of confidence to Duke athletics by turning down a prestigious job at Tennessee. Turning down a SEC job for one in the ACC is also a statement for the conference in its new and improved form.
He told one sportscaster he did it because his heart is in Durham. That is a class move by a class guy. It definitely shows he has faith in the future of Duke football.
Coach K has said he is proud of the football program and that is high praise. I am sure he is more than willing to share the bright spot light that has glared on him for so long.
