Patience needed in Raleigh

I don't mind saying I was shocked, surprised and even a little angry with the dismissal of Tom O'Brien last week as the coach of the NC State football team. He ran a quality program, cared for his kids and put a quality product on the field. Even more importantly he produced quality student athletes. One only has to look a few miles west to Chapel Hill to know that is not the case with all college programs. Headlines about rule violations, criminal acts and other things that might cast negative light on the program did not exist under O'Brien.
Unfortunately the product wasn't quite enough and athletic Director Debbie Yow felt the need to make a change. A week out I can see why she did. Change is always difficult but unfortunately is necessary at times.
With that in mind I hope Yow will take her time and find a quality replacement. There is no reason to think she won't. She seems intent on making a better program. She mentioned the quality basketball team that is growing under Mark Gottfried in her post O'Brien press conference. That is a good example for whoever the next coach is.. There will be bumps on the road because of young players but NCSU basketball is on the rise. Football can do the same thing with the right leadership.
State fans are great ones but at times quickly become impatient. There is a long line of former coaches who are victims of that fact. Wolfpack nation should give the hiring process time so football can catch up with basketball in Raleigh. Failure to do so will result in the same result as the hirings of recent history.
As for Mrs. Yow, we might not always agree but a big Kudos from the Corner for doing what you think is best for all of us longing for quality atheltic teams in the State capital. Time will tell if you did the right thing in the case of O'Brien.
