Here's to a legend

Heres to a legend.
I have mentioned him before but I had the opportunity this weekend to visit with a sports legend who maybe the best kept secret in the sports world.
"Timber" Dan Richards is known by just about anyone who played Little League sports in Dunn North Carolina. Anyone who coached, played or viewed a high school game likely knew Dan.
As editor of the local sports page he often appeared at games. He was there to write stories and in the process made many friends. He brought a personality to the games not seen since he left. Many of those he coached now have players of their own and wish Dan was still there to make new friends.
One look at Dan's book "Forty Years behind the Sports Desk" shows an incredible knowledge of everything sports. It should be must read for any course on the history of sport. It is a great read for anyone wanting an education, and a distraction at the same point.
Today Timber Dan is physically tired but his mind is sharper than ever. He may not be able to watch games in person but he still is there in spirit. He can still spout of scores without even batting an eye. He still brings a smile to the faces of anyone he encountered in those 40 years.
He is missed by anyone who passed his way. He is missed by the sports world. He is still a joy to anyone who takes time to pay him a visit.
