Smith and Rice great ones

There isn't a lot to say about the selection of Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice to the hall of fame this year. That more or less had to happen as soon as induction committee would allow it. Those two are the best of their generation and they have to be recognized in football's holiest shrine.

I am old enough to remember when Emmitt Smith ran around The Swamp for the University of Florida. Like most I didn't think he had the size to make it at the pro level. Like most, I was wrong.  That is why he was so great because he overcame what some called a disability, his size, to become the all time leading rusher.

We will forget that little Cardinal experiment at the end if of his career and remember # 22 as one of the leaders of the Cowboys and the greatest rusher of all time.

Jerry Rice was just plain good. I don't know how else to describe him. He would almost appear out of thin air at times to pull a Joe Montana pass in. He would make catches few others in history could. Like Smith we will forget his little late career experiment with the Raiders and Seahawks and call him perhaps the greatest receiver in history. Both Smith and Rice were natural choices for the hall.

I have to get a little shout out to Chris Berman for winning the Pete Rozelle award. Someone on the ESPN network that carried Berman to the top of his field said he was the best play by play man in history. No arguments here. Absolutely the best nicknames in history came, and still come for that matter, from his lips. The man called Boomer deserves any recognition he gets.

ESPN had the top 5 moments of each of their careers on yesterday and man oh man was it impressive. I think my favorite was Jerry Rice's 225 yards and 5 touchdowns in one game. To bad fantasy football wasn't around for those kind of numbers.
