PGA an hour of history

If you haven't seen it, you should.

Martin Kaymer won the PGA Championship today but frankly that is not going to be the story of the day. That will belong to Dustin Johnson and the strange rule of golf that kept him from a Wanamaker Trophy.

Apparently you are not supposed to "ground" a club if you are in a sand trap, learned something today. Ahead by two shots on the final hole Johnson hit his ball into what appeared to be a trampled down piece of dirt. He said afterwards it didn't cross his mind it could have been a sandtrap.

Most days that would have been accpetable but apparently PGA officials made it clear that anything even resembling a trap should be treated as one. To the television audience it had designs that seemed to indicate it was purposefully put there.

In the heat of the moment Johnson obviously forgot the warning that was posted around the locker rooms about the sand traps. His carelessness cost him two strokes and the opportunity to join Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer in a three hold playoff. As he said, the only thing worse would have been if he made the putt two shots after his gaff that would have made him think he was the tournament winner.

Hats off to the PGA for standing by their rules in the most difficult situation. They enforced the rules when it would have been easy not to. Hats off to Johnson for a great four day run. Best of luck next year.

One more PGA note, as I am somewhat of a golf fan I have to wonder where were Tiger, Phil, Ernie and Davis, oh my! Apparently Vijah did like the wind and decided to fly. Guys like Dustin, Rory, Bubba and were the names of the day. The golf gods really had their way. Thanks all for a great PGA!
