Mr. Next Year

I have a new nickname for Tom Glavine, who had his jersey retired in Atlanta this weekend. I think he should be called Mr. Next Year. That immediately seems strange to anyone less than 30 years old but it makes a lot of sense for Braves fans of old.

It is fitting because Glavine was a bridge between the teams of the 80s and those of the 90s. The phrase "Wait Until Next Year" could have been the motto of Atlanta in those years. Glavine no doubt heard it before he ever took the mound in Atlanta.

Until the 1991 season I don't know what we were waiting for, I guess another season of losing misery. Another season where the biggest entertainment of the year was whether Pascual Perez could find the stadium. Those were the days when "Chief Knock-a-Homa" could run on to the field without offending the politically correct.  That brought out smiles to a lot of kids saddened by another loss.

Then came Glavine and hope for the future. He was the first of those who would dominate a decade. John Smoltz came right along with him. They saw the end of bats like the legendary Dale Murphy. They saw fans gratefully wave goodbye to some of the worst teams in the game's history.

So Mr. Next Year should go on Glavine's hall of fame plaque. Wait about five years and we will see him in Cooperstown.

A day after his jersey was retired the attendance at Turner field was 47,305 on the dot. Glavine's jersey number was 47 and his career win total was 305. The attendance was just a day late to honor him!

Smoltz's number was 29, Maddux was 31. Between Maddux Smoltz and Glavine they won 7 Cy Young awards in the 1990's. I'd say thats a pretty good pitching staff.
