Hamilton could be a great one

If you are from Raleigh North Carolina and are a sports fan you know the name Josh Hamilton. He starred at a local high school before being drafted by Tampa Bay with the first overall pick in 1999. Personal problems, drugs and alcohol, took the early years of his career, 2001-2005, away but he has survived through lots of rehab to become a genuine star.

I saw Hamilton play for the first time on television this week. The announcers compared him to Mickey Mantle. I am to young to remember Mantle but he is legendary. From what I saw Wednesday Hamilton has the potential to be that good and to make his own mark on baseball history.

Hamilton's  swing is hard to describe except to say it is unbelievable and beautiful to watch. On one at bat he turned what would have been a lazy fly ball of the wrist for most batters into a double off the wall, to the opposite field. That took hand strength most will never have.

On both the bases and in the field he runs like a race horse, with long and smooth strides. I didn't see him throw but I have a feeling his arm is as good as the other parts of the games.

Thirty years from now people may be saying players look like and play like Josh Hamilton. He is an amazing story of overcoming obstacles in your life. He has the talent to be a star in the major leagues for a long time. Going out on a limb here, but he has the talent to carry the Rangers to a World Series showdown with the Braves.

I personally didn't realize that he was from Raleigh. Glad to know that.

Claims no drugs or alcohol since 2005. He does drug test via urine samples 3 times a week. His wife is the daughter of Michael Chadwick who is one of the men who helped him with his drug problem.
