Davis will be victim of mess
I have learned one thing living in North Carolina and watching happenings in Blue Heaven and that is when Bill Friday speaks, people tend to listen. That is why his comments on the situation involving UNC athletics last week should be acknowledged. The fact he has gotten involved shows how serious this situation has become.
Mr. Friday said the school will get to the bottom of the mess and preserve the reputation of the school. School leaders will take those words to heart and someone will eventually be held responsible. That person is going to be Butch Davis, as it well should be.
Fingers are going to start pointing in this situation before long and they are going to be pointing in one direction, at the head coaches office. Say what you want to about previous North Carolina coaches but there were never probes into questionable activity involving agents until Davis got there. There were no questions about academic tutors illegally helping students until he arrived. There were no solemn press conferences held by school leaders warning reporters of bad news to be forthcoming.
Now both of those things have occurred and more controversy is no doubt waiting the school. It is bad enough that the NCAA is investigating the schools for agent issues but it will be the academic tutor issue that will sink Davis. It hits to close to him, with his own family possibly involved. The tutor involved personally tutored one of Davis’ own children. There are just to many coincidences for Davis to get out of this unscathed.
It is suspicious that the school announced its own probe before the NCAA got involved. That means the school found things it is ashamed of and is trying to stop them before they get exposed. It means there are things now being stopped that will likely never be seen by the outside world.
There is no telling what is left under the stone that hasn’t seen the daylight yet. There is, undoubtedly, a lot of scrambling going on as the school tries to salvage its football program. It will be interesting to see who suits up Saturday for the Heels. For once winning will take a back seat as the school makes sure those who take the field have a squeaky clean background sheet. The dynamics of Saturdays game are now much different than they were when the game was first put on the schedule.
It is sad for all fans of ACC athletics that an outsider like Davis has some in and allowed a black stain, as well as black santa, on the powder blue. He may or not be directly responsible but he is the one who is accountable for what goes on in his program. As Bill Friday said the school will get to the bottom of the controversy and when it does they will be looking for a new coach.
